ActBlue, a Democratic fundraising platform, is under fire for allegations of serious donor fraud. As a member of the Committee on House Administration, Rep. Anthony D’Esposito and other House Republicans have investigated ActBlue for laundering foreign contributions.
On Sunday, August 11th, Rep. D’Esposito appeared on Newsmax to discuss concerns with how ActBlue accepts and handles campaign contributions. “They’re using prepaid gift cards as a vehicle without the knowledge of the owner to launder campaign contributions…That would obviously violate federal campaign law. They are also not using the CVV number, which hinders verification. There’s been a report that there’s patterns of hundreds of donations of $2.50 from the same individuals,” D’Esposito told Newsmax.
Following the release of the letter by Chairman Bryan Steil of the House Administration Committee calling on the Federal Election Commission to investigate ActBlue, D’Esposito and other Committee members have offered several solutions to ensure safe and secure political donations and elections.
While on Newsmax, Rep. D’Esposito elaborated on legislation that would require political committees to verify CVV numbers and confirm the addresses of donors. It would also “prohibit political committees from accepting donations from gift cards or other prepaid credit cards, and it will require political campaigns to get the affirmative consent of donors before they make recurring contributions.”
